Vietnam ready to implement AI in education – time to choose the right tools

Vietnam is showing strong determination in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to education.

With large-scale training programs, decisive involvement from localities, and advanced tools like Khanmigo, Vietnam is gradually realising the goal of digital transformation in education in a substantive, effective manner, ensuring pedagogical and humane values.

Vietnam has made a significant mark on the global AI map, ranking 6th out of 40 countries in the World AI Index 2025. This ranking, announced last week by the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Research (WIN), marks the first time Vietnam has entered the Top 10 countries with the highest awareness and readiness in AI application.

The survey was conducted from December 2024 to January 2025 in 40 countries, with sociological data collected from 900 residents in four major cities in Vietnam. The results show that Vietnam scored 59.2 out of 100 points, surpassing many developed countries. Notably, Vietnam ranks 3rd globally in trust in AI (65.6 points) and 5th in AI acceptance (71.6 points). Other indicators, such as comfort in using AI and evaluation of application effectiveness, also exceed the global average.

AI application helps teachers and students teach and learn effectively.

These impressive results demonstrate the positive awareness and attitude of the public towards AI, creating an essential foundation for Vietnam to make breakthroughs in AI applications, especially in education.

In recent years, Vietnam has been actively implementing the National Strategy for Research and Development of AI Applications until 2030 (Decision 127/QD-TTg). The education sector is considered one of the focal points for bringing AI into practice through training programs, workshops, and the development of innovative teaching and learning tools.

The Ministry of Education and Training is also urgently implementing activities to build a digital competency framework, organizing many AI courses for teachers, and creating a strong foundation for educational innovation. Departments of Education and Training in Hanoi, Quang Tri, Tuyen Quang, and many other localities are organizing AI training for teachers, ready to embrace new technology. For instance, 4,000 teachers in Quang Tri have completed the “AI in Education” course on the Khan Academy platform – a testament to the readiness to learn and innovate among educators.

Khan Academy Vietnam and many international organisations like Google and Microsoft contribute to equipping Vietnamese teachers with AI knowledge. Recent AI seminars and discussions organized by the Ministry of Education and Training have attracted the attention of numerous experts, managers, and teachers nationwide.

In this trend, Khanmigo – a specialized AI tool for education developed by Khan Academy, is expected to become an intelligent teaching assistant, accompanying teachers and students in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Foundation (VNF) – the official and sole representative of Khan Academy in Vietnam- is working with Khan Academy USA to bring the Vietnamese version of Khanmigo for teachers to Vietnam in November 2025. This is a strategic step to bring educational AI closer to teachers and students in a substantive, safe, and effective manner.

Khanmigo has already been deployed in over 70 countries, such as Brazil and the Philippines. It has gradually proven its practical value in many U.S. states, like New Jersey, Texas, and Louisiana. It is no longer a future concept but has become a sensible solution, trusted by educational systems in many countries.

Khanmigo is a “tutor” that promotes personalised thinking and learning for students. Khanmigo uses the Socratic method, guiding students step by step to find solutions rather than providing immediate answers, helping to develop critical thinking and self-learning abilities. Khanmigo does not use student data to train AI, thus minimising response bias. To enhance answer accuracy, Khanmigo is continuously updated. Khan Academy’s AI experts regularly conduct red-teaming exercises to improve user safety. Additionally, conversations between students and Khanmigo can be monitored by teachers or parents to ensure ethical standards and responsibility in technology use, with conversation history being clearly and transparently accessible.

Not only is it a tool to support effective self-learning for students, but Khanmigo is also a comprehensive “teaching assistant” for teachers. Integrated directly on the Khan Academy platform, Khanmigo provides 25 specialised tools to support teaching activities, from lesson planning, creating learning materials, assessments, to personalising learning content for each student. Some standout features for teachers include: Preparing lesson plans, setting learning objectives, and discussion questions according to class level; Creating multiple-choice tests, evaluation rubrics, class newsletters, lesson summary poems, etc., to save time in lesson preparation; Personalizing learning content based on student capabilities: adjusting text difficulty, suggesting appropriate exercises, supporting goal setting for each student; Automatically analyzing knowledge gaps, providing detailed learning reports, helping teachers quickly adjust teaching methods. Khanmigo’s user-friendly interface requires no advanced tech skills, allowing all teachers to access and use it easily. All exchange information can be shared, printed, or downloaded for a flexible teaching organisation.

Introducing Khanmigo to Vietnam is a strategic move by The Vietnam Foundation, aiming to support teachers in mastering technology and guiding students to use AI correctly and safely. This effort builds a modern, effective, and humane learning ecosystem.

AI in general and Khanmigo, in particular, do not replace teachers but become tools that help teachers enhance their guiding role in the digital age classroom. When teachers access and apply first, students benefit more. This is also the core principle of digital transformation in education – not just about devices or software, but creating a substantive learning journey for each learner.
