Mr. Nguyen Huu Do, deputy minister of education and training, the director of continuing education, the director of primary education, the deputy director of secondary education, and experts from the ministry of education and training met with Khan Academy in an official meeting to discuss the activities of the Khan Academy Tieng Viet Program on February 6 in the morning.
Mr. Kieu Huy Hoa, the director of Khan Academy Tieng Viet (KATV), said that The Vietnam Foundation (VNF) and Khan Academy cooperate strategically. KATV is the only official translation representative of Khan Academy in Vietnam. He also introduced KATV during the meeting, a free online learning platform that uses Khan Academy’s English content but has been translated and localized into Vietnamese. In addition, the 2018 General Education Curriculum has been incorporated into the reorganized content of Khan Academy Tieng Viet.
As reported to the Deputy Minister, until 12/2022, there are nearly 500,000 accounts registered for KATV, almost 14 million minutes of learning. In addition, KATV has completed translating and localizing the math program into Vietnamese from grades 6 to 9, with more than 1.5 million words translated and more than 600 videos produced. The website https://vi.khanacademy.org/ of KATV has published Math content from grades six and seven.
KATV’s goal is to help Vietnamese students remove language barriers and develop self-study ability, develop the ability to use English, and provide preparation courses, especially the free SAT preparation course. KATV also helps teachers to use Khan Academy’s advanced learning management system to support teaching, Mr. Pham Duc Trung Kien, President of VNF, said at the meeting.
VNF has researched and applied the Open School model using the Khan Academy platform to support Decision 1373 of the Prime Minister on building a learning society in the period of 2021-2030; Decision 131 on strengthening the application of information technology and digital transformation in education and training for the period of 2022-2025 with a vision towards 2030, and Circular 09/2021 of the Ministry of Education and Training on the management and organization of online teaching. The concept helps educational institutions to implement digital transformation in teaching and learning management.
On Khan Academy’s representative side, based on experiences in other countries, Mr. Sandeep Bapna – Vice President of International Cooperation of Khan Academy emphasized the role of Education Managers in spreading Khan Academy as a supplemental program with public school students. He also indicated that the international Khan Academy team is ready to accompany and facilitate Vietnamese students to use this free learning resource.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Huu Do appreciated Khan Academy and VNF’s goal of promoting equity and reducing the gap in education with specific actions: making KATV widely known in the student community across the country and allowing students to access this free online learning platform. The Deputy Minister noted that, despite being an online education model, KATV has also focused on the role of teachers in guiding and supporting students.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Huu Do expressed the expectation that the sides would strengthen the exchange of experiences in training activities, digital transformation, online education, teaching and learning management, etc.
